During
that time, I developed a new obsession with the website polyvore.com and began
creating sets, joining groups and submitting them to contests. You will see a
bunch of my “sets” posted below. I have since stopped updating them to my blog
and twitter cause I wasn’t getting my “likes” or notice. It seems that one has
to have many followers on Polyvore as well as spend hours on the site to get
your “sets” nominated to be “Top Sets” by the Polyvore editors.
I’ve
managed to collect just over 100 followers. Followers are people who view your
sets on a regular basis. I am following about 330 artists. I won 4th
place in a group contest. Yeah! I’ve entered approximately 10+ contests.
Polyvore is a surprisingly relaxing activity that got me through the busy first
weekend of the month when my house was full of teenagers.
This
wasn’t my first teenager party but it was my most recent. I took the day off on
Friday, May 10th to prepare the house and pick up the food for the
party. My son wouldn’t let me make invitations to send out, he just wanted to
invite people over to the house after school. They got out early after school
on Friday and sure enough about 25 fourteen year olds showed up about 2:00 p.m.
It was about half girls and half boys.
I had
purchased Batman themed decorations, paper plates and games but my son decided
that he didn’t want any of that baby stuff. So I just used the Batman paper
plates and my good serving dishes. The party was held out in my back yard where
I set up several round table and chairs with umbrellas, table clothes. I set up
the food on the table inside.
The menu
included 50 pieces of Lucky’s fried chicken, 2 spaghetti casseroles , garlic
bread, salad, strawberry cheesecake, cupcakes and punch. There was plenty of
chicken. I didn’t have enough garlic bread. No one ate the salad. The punch
dispenser got broken and splattered punch all over the deck. Kids left the
paper plates on the table and they blew all over the yard before I told them to
pick them up.
I couldn’t
see much of what was going on because my son insisted on closing the blinds to
the patio doors and then the kids moved the tables around to the side of the
house so I couldn’t see what was going on. The hammock some how got broken but
other than that the yard was pretty much intact.
As the
evening went on, their parents were slowly picking up people but no one came in
to say hello. My friend Derelle came over around 5:30 or 6:00 p.m stopped by
for a piece of fried chicken and spaghetti. She brought a baguette of French
bread and some olive oil and cheese for us to snack on. I opened a bottle of
wine and we snacked on that stuff for a while. Then she packed up her stuff to
go see another friend who was helping her with her hair for that evening.
By about
7:00 p.m. everyone was gone that wasn’t staying over. I had to drive a few
people home. Sigh! When I got home, my husband was helping my son and his
friends put up the tent in the backyard. The plan was for the four boys to camp
out in the back yard. Initially I had told them that they could take the
television and the Xbox outside and they eventually got that rigged up but it
didn’t work the way that they wanted it to. So, they took a technology break.
Yeah! And spent the evening talking.
They
covered the floor of the tent with the air mattresses, took plenty of blankets
and sleeping bags outside and had a blast. They had electric extension cords
strung outside so that they could charge their phone and plug in a lamp. At
some point they ordered a pizza because they were hungry. When it first got
dark, I felt bad and told them to come inside because I didn’t want them to get
cold. No one wanted to come inside. They said after they got into the sleeping
bags that it was warm. So they spent the night camping in the yard eating pizza
and talking.
In the
morning they all came into the living room and hooked up the Xbox. Then they
wanted breakfast. By this time, I had re-discovered Polyvore and was happily
immersing myself in mindless creativity. But the boys wanted breakfast. So I
set about cooking grits, hot link sausages, eggs, toast, and biscuits.
I cleared
off the kitchen table for them to sit down and then my son announced that they
were eating breakfast on the patio. So they moved outside. It was quite warm on
Saturday, May 11th and they spent quite a bit of time sitting out
there. My son took the toaster and a loaf of bread out there and plugged it in
and they ate toast and jelly. I jokingly offered them some tea and they said
yes. So I took them a pot of peppermint tea. They drank two pots of tea while
they sat outside in the morning sun.
Eventually
they finished up, got dressed and went home. My son decided to go visit his
friends house so he and another friend when right over there.
After the
boys left my daughter decided to get dressed for her friends quinceañera. The party was at the Veterans Hall
and began at 3:00 p.m. I took my daughter to get a new dress David’s Bridal. We
found something on the clearance rack. It was a short black and white dress.
The top had black sequins and the bottom was white chiffon ruffle. She chose to wear flat
shoes instead of the low-heeled dressy shoes. Sigh! I let her borrow a dressy
purse and shoulder wrap. She put on her make up and I helped her curl her hair.
She called about 10:00 p.m for us to pick her up. She had a great time. Her
best friend who was in the school play with her was the birthday girl and had
two costume changes. I peeked into the hall when I dropped her off and she had
a long pink/orange color dress. I spoke with the mother when I was dropping my
daughter off and she invited me to stay. When I picked her up the mother told
me how happy her daughter was that her friends could come to the party because
she didn’t want it to just be her cousins at the party.
Mother’s
Day didn’t turn out to be all that great. The kids hid out in their room and I
sat alone on the patio. I cooked breakfast for my husband and then sat alone.
He finally got up and went to Costco to get some stuff for employee
appreciation week that was that Monday. Still nothing for me. Eventually he
went to the grocery store and purchased some items for lunch. Shrimp, flank
steak, hamburgers and hot dogs. Unfortunately he can’t cook very well. I was hoping for a picnic somewhere at a park. But hey...the backyard wasn't bad.
The Friday
before during the party, the huge Laz Boy chair I purchased for my husband
arrived. It is called the Brutus and I had it covered in leather like type
fabric. We had to re-arrange some of the furniture because the chair is so big.
No my living room looks more cluttered than ever. I would like to get rid of
the entertainment center and the computer cabinet and just use a flat screen
television. This would open up the space a lot more. Unfortunately that is
probably not in the cards.
Month End Wish List
