Okay for a while I have been wanting to update the kids bathroom with a pedestal sink. The cabinet that is in there is too large for the space and it gets wet when the kids take a shower. So I have been getting estimates from contractors and nagging my husband to replace it.

My husband says he will do it when he gets ready. The contractors were talking about doing all sorts of upgrades of pipes and repairing the wall and the floor and a bunch of stuff that I didn't think needed to be done so I decided to do it myself. I looked under the counter and saw where the faucet was attached and figured that I could just detach it and reattach it to the new sink and it would be all good.

Despite hubby saying no, I made the decision to do it anyway. So I loaded my kids into the car and we went to Home Depot and bought the sink and a tube of silicone. That's all we need right?

We got the sink home and set about taking the old cabinet out of the bathroom. This turned out to be more trouble than it appeared. My son was very helpful and he suggested we just rip the entire cabinet from the wall. We disconnected one or two pipes that we could loosen and went at it. This proved very effective.

I expected there to be a few holes where the cabinet was fastened to the wall but there was more. The contractors were right. The entire wall needed repairing but I didn't have time for that. Water was pouring from the wall at both the hot and cold pipes and we were unable to turn the water off from the handle under the sink so I ran to ask my husband for help. He told me how to turn the water off under the sink and I replied that the handles were broken. He gave a look only husband can give their wife when they are furious and then he pointed to where the water shut off to the house was. After a few minutes of the kids calling from their bathroom about water and buckets and hurry up and turn off the water. My husband got up from his giant lazy boy chair and he turned off the water to the house. Then he went and sat back down.

My son and I spent a while cleaning up the water and the mess and cleaning the floor. We dismantled the old cabinet and disposed of it and my son carefully took about the faucet and old piping being very careful to keep all of the pipes.

At this point I  decided to do a Google search to find out how to put the sink back together. I found numerous Youtube videos and other tutorials which indicate it was more project than I expected. One of the videos mentioned plummer's putty and so I asked hubby if he had any and he said no.

Since the water was off for the entire house and we can't turn the water back on until I reconnected the pipes or plugged the holes I set about putting the sink back together. Son and I went and got the new sink from the car and we started figuring out how everything went back together.

At this point, hubby gets up to come see what is going on. He looks around at son who has carefully set all the pieces to the sink and tells me to go get some plummer's putty at the store. In other words...get the he** out of here. So I go get the plumbers putty and bring it back.

After a while, hubby get most of the piping reattached and then realized that when you put the sink on it doesn't reach to the pipes as the sink is at a different height than the sink/ cabinet that we removed. Hubby doesn't say anything but he takes a few pipes and heads off to the hardware store.

He returns with the fixtures and pipes that are appropriate length and hubby and son hook everything up. They turn the water back on and water is leaking all over the place. So they remove the pipes and tighten the joints and reattach the sink.

At this point the sink is reattached and is functional. We still have to wait for the drywall to dry out before patching and painting. There is a small hole in the corner where I put my toe through the drywall which needs to be fully repaired.

Hubby says kids can't use their shower until the drywall is repaired so they will be taking baths or using my shower.

I'm thinking about replacing the toilet in my bathroom next week.
